Longina (trova traditional, Manuel Corona Raimundo, Cuba)

During the second half of the 19th century, a form of poetry was born among the working class of the eastern regions of Cuba, sung by authors, composers and performers accompanying themselves on the guitar. They developed the custom, after a hard day’s work, of meeting with friends in peñas; at night, they sang spontaneous serenades in duos or trios under a woman’s or friend’s window, until the early morning. This is the origin of the Trova Cubana. Longina, a tribute to the magnificent version by the female vocal duo Las Hermanas Marti, was composed in 1919 by Manuel Corona Raimundo. It is a hymn to the fatal sensuality of Cuban women.
