SMT Thalassemia Care & Prevention Centre | Kotli | Azad Kashmir | 2022

Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder whereby an abnormal form of haemoglobin is produced, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to Anaemia. It is caused by a genetic mutation or deletion of specific key gene fragments, passed on if either of the parents are carriers of the disease.

There are hundreds of patients in Kotli (AJK) & its surrounding areas, who are suffering from Thalassemia. A debilitating health condition with patients having an average life expectancy of fewer than 20 years, many of them dying without a diagnosis, Thalassemic patients need URGENT CARE!!!

What we are doing?
In this contention, Save The Mothers Trust opened a Thalassemia Centre in March 2022, SMT aims to achieve quality-assured blood transfusions & provide a good standard of medical care. SMT has commenced this journey with very few assets but many hopes. Now in practical circumstances.

SMT is not only a ray of life for these poor sufferers but also a vehicle for education about this deadly disease through printed material & individual counselling, for the affected families. This allows parents to provide better care on a regular basis for their children. With limited resources & a constantly increasing number of patients, Save The Mothers Trust is experiencing some very critical problems in the continuation of the provision of services.
