. The Program's Origins (1990s)
The F-35 began with the goal of replacing a diverse array of aging fighter and attack aircraft in the US Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps, as well as allied nations, with a common, affordable, fifth-generation stealth platform.

1993: The Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) program was formed in the U.S.

1995: The program was officially renamed the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The core requirement was unprecedented: a single aircraft design that could be adapted into three distinct variants to meet the unique needs of different military branches.


1996: Contracts were awarded to Lockheed Martin (proposing the X-35) and Boeing (proposing the X-32) to build concept demonstrators. The UK also joined the program as a key partner.


2. The Competition and Selection (2000–2001)
The competition phase involved testing the two demonstrator aircraft, the X-32 and the X-35.

October 2000: The X-35A demonstrator completed its first flight.

The "Hat Trick": The X-35 team famously converted one demonstrator into the X-35B, which then became the first jet in history to complete a short takeoff, supersonic dash, and vertical landing in a single flight.

October 2001: Lockheed Martin was declared the winner of the JSF competition. The design was officially designated the F-35 Lightning II. The program then moved into the System Development and Demonstration (SDD) phase.



3. Development, Production, and Milestones (2006–Present)
