Southern Illinois Deep Cave

Sand Cave is probably one the largest natural cave shelters in the Shawnee National Forest. This area was an used in the Underground Railroad for helping runaway slaves.

Park at the end of Sand Cave Road. Do not block any driveways! There is room for a few vehicles to park but not many. Follow the old road (lots of mud holes) until you get to the sign on your right and take the trail by it to the right. Follow it until you get to the cave shelter. The hike isn't very long there and back, maybe a few miles.
