What is IPX9K Testing?
The IPX9K standards are among the highest order of ingress protection water ratings currently available in the IP Code family of tests. Originally added as a DIN standard for road vehicle parts and transport equipment, the IPX9K family of test has since evolved with the inclusion of IPX9K into the IEC60529 standards.

Test Standards:
IPX9K: DIN 40050-9 – Road Vehicles; Degrees of Protection (IP Code); Protection against foreign objects, water and access electrical equipment
IPX9: IEC60529 – Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

How tough is an IPX9K Test?
IPX9 & IPX9K testing are among the harshest ingress tests that a product or device under test can be subjected to. Often, rubber and plastic parts deform under testing; When developing a product to meet IPX9K standards, everything has to be considered, from the selection of material types used in construction and shape retention characteristics under load. Careful consideration must be given to design the equipment enclosure, seals and exposed components. Devices under test are subjected to temperatures of almost 180° F and pressures of up to 1450 PSI, creating two minutes of intense environmental stress.

Test Parameters:
The sample is placed on a rotating turntable, each fan jets water for 30 seconds, for a combined test cycle of 2 minutes.

While IPX9 & IPX9K are the highest water rating IP codes that can be achieved, please note that the rating does not correlate to an IPX7 or IPX8 immersion value. In other words, if you pass IPX9/IPX9K you do not automatically meet IPX7 or IPX8. You must still perform immersion tests.

This is not a test that should be taken casually. Serious design consideration must be made when seeking an IPX9 or IPX9K rating.
