Dolch Sight Words - http://www.dolchsightwords.org/ - are a list of words developed by Edward Dolch in 1948 derived from a survey of children's books. They are all words that children (or adults learning English) need to learn to recognize and read by sight in order to achieve reading fluency. This is the case because they are all very common words but mostly do not follow normal phonics rules, so can not be sounded out.

Dr Dolch counted the frequency of words, and developed six words lists:

Five lists of "service words" - containing 220 words in total - and subdivided into 5 grades, or levels of difficulty - pre-primer, primer, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd gade

A list of 95 nouns

Because of their importance in learning to read, Dolch sight words tend to be emphasized in both K-12 and ESL (English as a Second Language) classes.

Some activities than can be done to practice them include:

Reading - all reading helps, and in fact some children's books, like "The Cat in the Hat" are made up of about 80% Dolch sight words!
