Field Study Script Business and Marketing Education:
Field study is the opportunity for a “hands-on” experience under the guidance of expert university and middle school field professionals. The course corresponding to the business and marketing field experience is CIFLD 402. This is a pre-student teaching middle school placement and must be taken in conjunction with CIFLD 492, SECNDED 442, and SECNDED 444. If you are seeking dual licensure in business and marketing, you must also enroll in SECNDED 440. Your placement will last between 6-8 consecutive weeks and is typically a morning or afternoon placement. It can occur anytime during the semester in which you are enrolled, but most often placements are Sept-Oct or Oct-Dec. You will be notified of the dates, times, location, and name of your cooperating teacher by the Office of Field Experience once your placement is confirmed. You are required to have a criminal background check and health clearance the directions and due date will be sent from the Office of Field Experiences. It is your responsibility to have reliable transportation to and from the field site.

School districts and other agencies provide field sites for our students as a professional courtesy. Many things affect their decision to take students including staffing needs, district priorities, curriculum, and timing. In addition, some schools ask our students to interview or take an assessment such as the Teacher Insight prior to accepting their placement request. How students interview or their score on these exams may disqualify them for a placement in a particular school or district.

Another issue that could block or prevent a placement match is the student’s own criminal background check or CBC. While the College of Education and Professional Studies does not make placement determinations based on student background checks, items that show up on the CBC may prevent the Office of Field Experience from making a placement, even if these items would not preclude one from attaining a teaching license in Wisconsin. In these instances, the Office of Field Experience will make three attempts at a placement. If three school districts deny placements based on items in the student’s CBC the student will not be able to complete field study or student teaching and shall graduate “non-licensure,” provided that all other requirements for the major are met.
