Lycian Trail
Lycia is the historical name of the Tekke Peninsula, which flows into the Mediterranean Sea on the south coast of Turkey. The mountains rise steeply from the rocky shore, giving beautiful views and varied walks. Forestry prevails; pine trees mix with strawberries and carob trees and give way to juniper and cedar at higher elevations. Along with coastal tourism, intensive agriculture is crowded with deltas.
Lycians were democratic, but independent, warlike people, with a developed artistic style and a high standard of living. Their strategic position gave them unique opportunities for maritime trade and (sometimes) for piracy. After Persian rule, the Lycians greeted Alexander the Great and absorbed Greek culture. Lycia later became a province of the Roman Empire. The Romans developed many cities and ports, connecting them with paved roads and equipping them with theaters, bathhouses, forums, temples and front gates. Since the 4th century, Christianity has established itself, and when the Roman Empire collapsed, many Byzantine monasteries were founded on the Lycian hills. Lycian graves and ruins abound on the peninsula, and about 25 distant historical sites pass along the Lycian Way.
