This presentation will describe a series of undergraduate courses at University of Illinois Chicago designed to introduce students working in a variety of disciplines to Chicago-based archival research. It will focus on creative adaptations during the recent public health crisis that enabled the semester-long for-credit courses to continue online. Class members utilized digital tools to research and share stories that mattered to them from the history of twentieth century Chicago. In order to foster robust engagement with collection materials remotely, students were tasked with creating virtual exhibitions using digital surrogates of primary source materials and Scalar open-source web-based software for multi-media online publications. I will suggest that while practitioners of archival and special collections research have a fondness for physical work with unique objects, there are also special advantages to digital engagement with collections that we may want to harness going forward – including the potential to diversify and democratize access to the interpretation of materials in archives and special collections.
