The London System is a popular 1.d4 opening for White which has the reputation of being very solid. The London is considered a system because White can play the same basic setup for almost all of Black's responses. For this reason, the theory on the London is not as extensive as it is for other openings.
The London System is a solid, easy-to-learn chess opening where White develops the pieces to a consistent setup, typically starting with 1. d4 and developing the bishop to f4, building a pawn pyramid with e3, and bringing out the knights and king's bishop. It allows White to reach a harmonious and safe position, focusing on middle-game attacks and flexible plans, and was known as the Mason Variation in the 1880s after Irish player James Mason.
The Setup
1. d4: White starts by moving the queen's pawn two squares forward.
