Nuro R2: Self-Driving Robot Will Bring You a Domino’s Pie and All Your Groceries & Carry-Out

NURO, the self-driving delivery company started in 2016 by a pair of Google veterans, is moving into the pizza game. Nuro’s robot will start delivering Domino’s pies and cheesy breads to customers in the Houston area.

Since 2018, Nuro has been moving groceries for Kroger in Scottsdale, Arizona, and in Houston. For this Domino’s deal, hungry robophobes can opt for a human delivery. Those OK with the robot will be issued a code to enter into a screen on the bot that opens one of its two compartments so they can collect their melted cheese and whatnot.

Nuro is the first self-driving vehicle company to receive an exemption from the US government's safety standards. The decision means Nuro can make self-driving delivery vehicles without features that would be required in passenger cars, like side mirrors and windshields.

The vehicle received an exemption from NHTSA's standards for low-speed vehicles, which means it won't be able to drive faster than 25 mph.

Over the next two years, Nuro will be able to deploy up to 5,000 R2 vehicles on public roads, though NHTSA is requiring Nuro to give it updates about how its R2s perform and engage in community outreach in areas where the R2 will be used.
