Being a deep peat landscape, the Kampar Peninsula retains exceptionally high carbon stocks. However, years of selective logging have degraded the Kampar forest. This fragile ecosystem is further threatened by draining of peat swamp caused by agriculture and fires started by newcomers encroaching on the land. Large amounts of carbon dioxide have been released into the atmosphere as a direct result of these activities. It is imperative that the Kampar Peninsula be properly managed to preserve the ecosystem, prevent fires and the worsening haze issues in the region.

Restorasi Ekosistem Riau (RER) is a new conservation reserve set up through a multi-stakeholder collaboration, to restore peat forests in the Kampar Peninsula. Understand the work that will be put in to protect this unique, delicate ecosystem.
