We dived HMS M1 on the 19/8/25 in rather sporting conditions, below the water it was very different it was dark due to layers in the water but the vis was really quite good. Thoroughly enjoyable dive with a max depth of 74m and a total runtime of 116mins.

HMS M1 was a unique British submarine designed to carry a large gun instead of relying solely on torpedoes. Launched in 1917, it sank in 1925 after a collision with a Swedish ship, resulting in the loss of her entire crew.

• Origin and Purpose: HMS M1 was one of four M-class submarines ordered by the Royal Navy during World War I. These submarines were initially intended as "submarine monitors" equipped with a large gun for use against surface ships.

• Key Features: The submarine was fitted with a 12-inch (305 mm) gun, with the intention of targeting enemy vessels. The gun had a range of 15,000 yards (14 km) and was aimed using a simple bead sight at periscope depth. It could only be reloaded on the surface. HMS M1 also had a 3-inch anti-aircraft gun and four 18-inch torpedo tubes.

• Specifications: HMS M1 had a length of 295 feet 9 inches (90.14 m) and displaced 1,946 long tons (1,977 t) when submerged. It was powered by two 12-cylinder Vickers diesel engines and four electric motors, allowing for a surfaced speed of 15 knots (17 mph; 28 km/h) and a submerged speed of 8–9 knots (9.2–10.4 mph; 15–17 km/h).

• Service and Loss: HMS M1 was launched on July 9, 1917, but did not see active service during World War I. On November 12, 1925, while participating in an exercise in the English Channel, HMS M1 was struck by the Swedish collier SS Vidar. The collision tore the gun from the submarine's hull, causing it to flood and sink rapidly, resulting in the death of all 69 crew members.

• Discovery: The wreck of HMS M1 was discovered in 1999 by a diving team led by Innes McCartney at a depth of 73 meters (240 ft). The wreck is now designated as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.
