Overlanding for Cheapskates. Why? How?

An approach to overlanding on a shoestring budget, using my "daily driver" SUV. What is overlanding anyway, and why might an over-the-hill retired guy (or you) want to do it? Do I have to spend a lot of money to do it? (No) Did I do it as cheaply as possible? (Unfortunately not) Could you do better? (Yes)
