এক সময়ের শিল্প ও বন্দর নগরী হিসেবে পরিচিত খুলনা দিন দিন হারাচ্ছে তার অর্থনৈতিক গতিশীলতা। দীর্ঘ এক যুগে বন্ধ হয়েছে নিউজপ্রিন্ট মিল, টেক্সটাইল মিলসহ বহু শিল্প প্রতিষ্ঠান। পাঁচ বছর আগে বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়া ৯টি রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত্ব পাটকলের ৪টি ইজারায় চালু হলেও তা চলছে খুড়িয়ে খুড়িয়ে। ফলে এ অঞ্চলে কর্মহীন হয়ে পড়েছেন প্রায় ৩৫ হাজার শ্রমিক।

Khulna, once known as an industrial and port city, is losing its economic dynamism day by day. Many industrial establishments, including newsprint mills and textile mills, have closed down over a long period of time. Although four of the nine state-owned jute mills that were closed down five years ago have been started on lease, they are still running sluggishly. As a result, about 35,000 workers in the region have become unemployed.
