This fall I began planting the core foundation plants for a dry part shade garden at the back of our property by the fence, which faces north:

4 Aucuba Japanica ‘Gold Dust’ spotted laurel
3 Thuja ‘Green Giant’ arborvitae
2 Ilex opaca Satyr Hill’ American hollies

I chose evergreen trees and shrubs for wildlife benefit and year round interest. I’m excited to continue to add plants to this area, including more shrubs and deciduous trees for added color and possibly flowers during the growing and fall seasons.

The area where I planted was very challenging due to the surface roots from the decades old maple trees. I was careful to remove the roots (with a sawzall!) from the planting holes and raised the plants above the surface a few inches for extra drainage, creating a mound with the dug dirt to create room to root in. A couple inches of mulch was also added as a topper for moisture retention and insulation.
I plan on consistent watering to get these plants established.

Please note the berries of aucuba are toxic to humans, pets, and some wildlife animals. However some berry eating birds such as robins and cedar waxwings are able to eat the berries when food is scarce.

The Green Giants and American Hollies are native trees that provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for birds and small mammals.
