It is said that the Ladies of the Forest took possession of the land at that time: three sisters, as old as the first rain, beautiful and monstrous all at once. Under their rule, Velen knew neither peace nor order, only a fragile balance between fear and survival.

Even today, those who venture too far hear the whispers of the past: the creak of a gallows, a mother's cry, the laughter of a child never seen. The peasants say the forest protects those who serve it… and devours those who offend it. As for the witchers, they know that in Velen, even the trees have eyes, and that certain shadows are just waiting for a misstep to snap their claws shut.
