What is a Human Growth Hormone (HGH) test?

The HGH test is done to measure the level of GH (growth hormone) in the blood. HGH, also known as somatotropin, is produced by the pituitary gland and is essential for growth in people of all ages. This hormone is also essential for metabolic functions in adults. The pituitary gland is small, about the size of a pea, located in the lower part of the brain. This hormone is secreted during sleep, exercise, low blood sugar and hypoglycemia.

It helps in fat mobilization and is associated with the actions of insulin. Sometimes a GH test may not be able to diagnose the condition accurately, so a GH stimulation or suppression test may also be done.

Why is an HGH test done?

This test tells about both normal and abnormal conditions of GH hormone. This test can detect stunted growth in rare cases or excess hormone levels in some cases. It is also used to monitor pituitary gland function and the effectiveness of treatment for abnormal GH production.
