Correct computer posture and good ergonomics is all about precision. In this video, I will show you how the distance between your office chair and your desk can influence the muscle strain in the neck, the mid back and the lower back. This is true in the office on a normal desk as well as when you stand on your sit stand desk, but also if you are working from home!

According to the 3 Rules of Posture, the neck muscles need to be relaxed. If you sit too close to your desk, you will pull your elbows backwards, contract the rhomboid muscles and strain the upper trapezius muscle.

Even if you push the keyboard forward next to the screen, leaning on your forearms will also create neck strain. Worse even, I will reduce elbow mobility and therefore force ulnar deviation and radial deviation in your wrist. This will cause tendinitis (e.g., tennis elbow).

If you go even closer to your desk, you will slouch and this will cause lower back pain, possibly even a disc hernia.

You see: posture correction, ergonomic desk set up and muscle relaxation are not only about an ergonomic chair, a sit stand desk or some other fancy stuff at work: it's mostly about how you use your body. Body awareness is therefore the price to avoid upper back pain, neck pain or lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow etc., formerly known as RSI (repetitive strain injury).
