In a natural pregnancy, a woman uses her own eggs, her husband’s sperm, and her own uterus to conceive. In Donor Egg IVF, eggs are taken from another woman, fertilized with the husband’s sperm, and then placed into the patient’s uterus. The baby is still delivered by the patient herself.

In Surrogacy, the eggs can be the patient’s or from a donor, sperm is from the husband, but the embryo is placed in another woman’s uterus. This woman, known as the surrogate, carries and delivers the baby.

Surrogacy is indicated for women who do not have a uterus, or have severe uterine problems where pregnancy cannot continue successfully—such as repeated IVF failures, recurrent miscarriages, large fibroids, adenomyosis, or cases where the uterus has been surgically removed. Some women are born without a uterus, and for them too, surrogacy may be the only option.

Earlier, commercial surrogacy was legal in India, but now it is banned. Only altruistic surrogacy is allowed, meaning a close relative or family member can carry the pregnancy. The child’s birth certificate will have the commissioning couple’s names, not the surrogate mother’s.

On the other hand, Donor Egg IVF is simpler—only the egg is taken from outside, while the patient herself carries and delivers the baby, often creating a stronger natural bond.

In short:

Donor Egg = outside egg, patient carries baby.

Surrogacy = outside uterus, another woman carries baby.
