Percussionists are always searching for the perfect way to mount and arrange our instruments for each different piece that we play. Even with the incredible variety of percussion accessories on the market today, the perfect solution isn’t always available, and often times we’re forced to become inventors and engineers ourselves. Every percussionist has at least a few highly-specialized, DIY solutions in their arsenal. Since we’re musicians we improvise, cobbling together miscellaneous hardware store bits, kitchen gadgets, and duct tape until we fashion something that does the job.

Although useful and sometimes even ingenious, these DIY solutions can present a less-than professional appearance onstage. And despite what you may have heard from countless drummer jokes, percussionists are serious musicians. When I’m creating new instruments or accessories for Third Coast Percussion, I strive for the things they use on stage, no matter how big or small, to reflect their level of artistry.

One of these often-used accessories has eluded my revision so far, so we’re going to take a look at it now.
