Lately, it seems like teen pop idols might be disappearing. The concept of teenhood has been around since the 1950s, and so has pop music, so it only makes sense that the genre started to create pop acts to market to teens. Some of the earliest ones include Elvis, Ritchie Valens, and the Beatles. In the 70s and 80s, teen pop idols included the Osmond Brothers, the Jackson 5, Madonna, Tiffany, Menudo and Michael Jackson. In the 90s, teen pop idols and groups only grew in popularity. This decade saw the rise of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, NSYNC, the Backstreet Boys, Selena, Aaliyah, Usher, TLC, Brandy, and Destiny's Child. As these teen idols became more popular, more movies, TV shows, and other forms of media were made to market to them. Several teen magazines were created during this time, like M, Bop, J-14, Teen, Vogue, and Tiger Beat. The 90s also saw the inception of the Teen Choice Awards. In the 2000s, several other teen idols rose to fame like Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Jesse McCartney, and Aaron Carter. The Disney Channel also produced several popular acts like the Cheetah Girls, Aly and AJ, Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and Raven Symone. They also created popular franchises like Camp Rock and High School Musical. The 2010s saw the rise of popular groups like Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, and One Direction. Currently, the biggest teen idols are Billie Eilisha and Olivia Rodrigo. It sort of seems like these teen pop idols are dying out in the west, but are still going strong in industries like Kpop. The industry's newest sensation, New Jeans, has been taking KPop by storm, and is breaking streaming records held by other massively successful groups like BlackPink.
