(11 Sep 2017) Several dozen Arab Muslims in Israel gathered outside the Myanmar Embassy in Tel Aviv on Monday to protest against the treatment of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
The protesters demanded an immediate stop to the violence that has seen some 270,000 people displaced.
The protest was organised by the Islamic Movement in Israel, a grouping that advocates Islamic rights in Israel.
The UN refugee agency has reported that 270,000 people have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh in the last three weeks.
It said there were reports, backed by satellite imagery, of security forces and local militia burning Rohingya villages and committing extrajudicial killings.
An estimated one to 1.2 million people in Myanmar's western state of Rakhine identify themselves as Rohingya.
The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize them as one of the country's 135 lawful ethnic minorities, instead calling them Bengalis, with the implication that their native land is in Bangladesh and that they are illegally settled in Myanmar.
They are similarly unwelcome in Bangladesh.
