Suzuki GSX-S1000GT | Bike review

The Suzuki GSX-1000 GT, a new traditional sports tourer designed to take you, your luggage, and a pillion on tour in comfort. But a sports tourer is something of a rarity in the motorbike world these days. So, why did Suzuki decide to revive what's seemingly a dying breed? And could this stylish looking motorcycle win over a self confessed adventure biker.

To find out, I've been running the GSX-S1000GT as a long-term review bike throughout 2022. I've ridden through the Scottish Highlands, toured the South West of England, and commuted on a 60-mile daily commute.

During that time, something rather strange happened. If you'd asked me a few months ago what type of bike I'd choose to ride on tour, I would have said an adventure bike without a doubt. Perhaps a BMW R 1250 GS, a Ducati Multistrada V4, or a KTM 1290 Super Adventure. However, the Suzuki GSX-S1000 GT's superb road manners, excellent performance, and relative comfort has left me questioning that decision.

What's it like to ride?

It’s all well and good making a sports tourer fast and fun. Suzuki has achieved this with a bike that will rip your arms off with 150bhp and 106Nm of fierce acceleration. Combine this with flickable handling and it makes snaking along fast-flowing roads a euphoric experience.

But the trickier part of the sports tourer equation is making a performance bike feel comfortable and relaxing to ride over long-distances. After all, when you’re clocking up 300 miles a day through Europe, you don’t particularly want your body surging with adrenalin for eight hours straight. And you also don’t want to feel cramped with aching wrists and a face full of wind blast for two weeks straight.

Which is where the relaxing qualities of the GT comes in. While you can wrench the throttle open and rocket up the road like a missile, personally, I like to accelerate smoothly, feeling the power build through the rev range as I snick through the gears using the excellent quick shifter. And this approach makes the bike a joy ride over long distances.
