The Sundance-winning Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears), the first-ever Indian fiction feature to win the Grand Jury Prize, the highest honour at the Film Festival, launches its offical trailer.
The film, written and directed by Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, is set to release in theatres across India on 19th September 2025, distributed by Rana Daggubati’s Spirit Media,
The film follows Anand, a city-dweller grappling with personal loss and familial pressures, as he embarks on a 10-day mourning ritual in his ancestral village. Amid the rugged beauty of western India, he finds solace and connection with Balya, a childhood friend facing similar societal expectations. Featuring a stellar cast, including Bhushaan Manoj, Suraaj Suman, and Jayshri Jagtap, the narrative delicately captures the complexities of personal relationships forged under challenging circumstances and celebrates the courage it takes to honor one’s truth.
In a momentous development, acclaimed filmmakers Nikkhil Advani, Vikramaditya Motwane, Sai Tamhankar and Nagraj Manjule have come on board as Executive Producers for Sabar Bonda to champion the film. Their support not only amplifies the film’s reach in India but also reinforces the cultural significance of this landmark project, placing Sabar Bonda among defining works of Indian cinema and a global celebration of Marathi storytelling.
The project was mentored through the 11th Venice BCC and was part of the Venice GFM 2023. The film has been financed by friends and well-wishers. Rohan shot the film in his village in Western India to recreate and also mend his experience of grieving his father. His relatives, along with professionals like DOP Vikas Urs, sound recordist Mandar Kamalapurkar, and costume designer Sachin Lovalekar, joined to bring Rohan's vision for seldom-told stories of lower-class queer India to life.
The 600+ hour Dolby Atmos sound design and mixing has been done by Naren Chandavarkar, Anirban Borthakur and Boloy Kumar Doloi.
Sabar Bonda (“Cactus Pears”) is produced by Neeraj Churi (Lotus Visual Productions, U.K.), Mohamed Khaki (Canada), Kaushik Ray (Taran Tantra Telefilms, U.K.), Naren Chandavarkar (Moonweave Films, India), Sidharth Meer (Bridge PostWorks, India) and Hareesh Reddypalli (Dark Stories, India), along with co-producers Jim Sarbh (Wonderful Entertainment, India), Neha Kaul (Thirty Nine By Six) and associate producer Rajesh Parwatkar (U.K.).
