VIDEO DESCRIPTION:

In this exciting episode of Tiny Home Tours' truck build series, Abe and Mel continue their journey of turning a Ford F550 box truck into a fully-custom expedition vehicle for full-time living. After picking up their truck, installing a new box, getting it painted, and finalizing their wish list, it’s now time to take the next big step—cutting holes and transforming this truck into a comfortable, functional home on wheels.

Cutting Holes & Installing Tern Overland Windows: One of the most nerve-wracking parts of any build is cutting into a new rig, but Abe and Mel are up for the challenge! They opted for Tern Overland windows and doors due to their top-notch features and durability. With large windows in the living room and kitchen, this build will have ample natural light and spectacular views of the places they travel to. Tern Overland’s screens and blackout features make these windows perfect for both privacy and ventilation.

Custom Cargo Doors & Innovative Storage Solutions: Wess from Darkwolf Artisans and his team install custom cargo doors on both sides of the truck, providing easy access to important utilities like the RV water inlet and gray water tank, along with a unique storage solution for adjustable weights. These heavy-duty, insulated doors not only ensure easy access but also offer excellent waterproofing for the rugged lifestyle of an expedition vehicle.

Torklift GlowStep Revolution & Roof Layout: To make getting into their raised rig easier, Abe and Mel install Torklift International’s GlowStep Revolution, a set of durable, removable steps that are compact and adjustable depending on the campsite terrain. They also plan out the roof layout, making space for key features like a 12V Nomadic Cooling air conditioner, multiple Grape Solar Panels, and a MaxxAir fan—all mounted on a custom aluminum extrusion roof rack. This setup minimizes roof penetrations while maximizing functionality, ensuring the truck is equipped for full-time living in any climate.

Rugged Exterior & Stylish Accessories: For a sleek, off-road look, the couple adds some finishing touches, including a custom roof rack, all-terrain tires, and traction boards. They’ve partnered with Melipron to install a new cargo case on the cab roof and added a 42-inch light bar from Nilight for enhanced visibility during late-night camp arrivals. This build combines practicality with rugged aesthetics, perfect for adventurous expeditions.

Upgrading the Wheels & Tires: Abe and Mel decided to switch from the Ford F550’s standard 19.5-inch wheels to a new set of 20-inch wheels from Dually Design Co, which allows them to run all-terrain tires without any modification to the rig. This decision not only enhances the vehicle's off-road performance but also gives it the tough, expedition-style look they’ve envisioned.

From cutting windows to installing new wheels, this episode covers the critical exterior transformation that will take this truck from a basic box to an adventure-ready RV. Stay tuned as Abe and Mel start to work on the interior design, bringing their vision for a dream home on wheels to life!
