Selecting Breeding Rams For Flock Improvement

As we await customers picking up a Suffolk ram lamb from us, we decided to talk about what we look for when selecting rams for breeding stock on your sheep farm that will help your ewes produce the best lambs possible in your flock. Whether you have a commercial flock producing lambs for the market or you are breeding registered sheep for showing, the traits you need for your flock sire should be the same. Today, we tell you what we look for when we choose our rams. Of course, what we think are important traits may or may not coincide with what others look for in their rams, but it is always nice to see what others are looking for regardless. Then, we see what others choose as another one of our Suffolk ram lambs heads off to his new home. Later, we take one of our homegrown rams out on a halter to discuss whether or not we will use him in the second round of breeding coming up shortly.

Of course, we also see many more of our sheep as we go through chores, and we do a quick update on Little Mister, our troublesome Dorset ram lamb. And lately, a visit to our sheep barn would be incomplete without stopping to say hello to our barn cats!
