In this video I take a look at vertically scaling our Laravel / PHP application within the Amazon cloud infrastructure. I cover the following:

1. Nginx configuration options to fine tune performance
2. PHP-FPM configuration options to fine tune performance
3. Performance testing "gotchas"
4. Fixes to some common limits such as file handles, and network session reuse

I compare the performance of the following instance types:

t2.micro (1 vCPU / 1GiB RAM)
t2.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 32 GiB RAM)
m7i.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 32 GiB RAM)
c7i.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 16 GiB RAM)
r7i.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 64 GiB RAM)
i4i.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 64 GiB RAM)

Each of the above (with the exception of the t2.micro) have 8 vCPU but different amount of RAM. In addition, they also have different network bandwidths, EBS bandwidths, and disk options.

I then take the c7i instance type and scale it vertically to measure performance differences. In this section I look at the following:

c7i.large (2 vCPU / 4 GiB RAM)
c7i.xlarge (4 vCPU / 8GiB RAM)
c7i.2xlarge (8 vCPU / 16 GiB RAM)
c7i.4xlarge (16 vCPU / 32 GiB RAM)
c7i.8xlarge (32 vCPU / 64 GiB RAM)
