(29 Nov 2014) Security forces in Peru carried out a security drill on Friday to simulate an attack by extremists ahead of a United Nations Climate Change Conference which Lima will host in December.
The drill was part of Peru's preparations ahead of the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP), and simulated an attack during the climate change negotiations in which foreign senior officials were the targets.
The exercise involved more than 40 police graduates, trained in tactical shooting, rapid reaction to threat, and front shooting through a vehicle windshield.
Authorities have been conducting security exercises ahead of the event, which is expected to gather 195 international delegations.
Peru's National State Security Chief Carlos Tuse said that 40-thousand policemen will be deployed across Lima to ensure security.
The event starts on 1 December and meetings will be held for two weeks.
Leaders who participated in the G-20 summit recently in Australia agreed to work together towards a global agreement on reducing carbon gas emissions at a major UN climate change conference in Paris in September 2015.
The Lima meeting is the final high-level ministerial summit in which countries will aim to work toward a draft agreement to be presented in Paris.
