Lala did escape the automobile accident in the NCIS: Origins season 1 finale, as was previously implied. Given that the character's relationship with Gibbs has been central to the show's narrative, it didn't really make sense for it to write her up so soon. However, in revealing Lala's final destiny, the prequel becomes a bit more inventive.

After the crash, the show doesn't pick up right away. Lala's absence from Franks' team is established by a significant time jump. Without her, the team and the work simply haven't been the same, as Harmon's voiceover makes clear. Even while it describes the grueling rehabilitation Lala has been doing in order to return to work, it is his voiceover that also verifies her survival. Lala doesn't return to the team until the case of the week is settled.
