Ride the narrow switchbacks up the 1500-foot climb on Shafer Trail in Canyonlands National Park. This motorcycle ride will get your adrenaline up as you cling to the side of the canyon walls and see unbelievable views of the valley below.

Once a trail used by native people to access the high mesa from the Colorado River below, the trail has been used by sheep herders to move their flocks, and was developed further in the 1950’s in search of uranium to produce nuclear weapons during the Cold War. It is now part of Canyonlands National Park in the Island in the Sky district, and is the beginning of the 100-mile backcountry White Rim Trail that wraps around the national park.

This ride was on day 3 of my 4-day solo moto-camping trip across Colorado and Utah in September of 2025.
