#Plastics are a big issue with a negative impact on our lives. Many of our products today come packaged in plastic containers and only 9% get actually #recycled. There are #refill systems and ways to cut back on plastic #packaging. Is Refillables the Way Forward?

In this #Smart Sustainability episode, we look at options: one is a refill system with an interactive screen and roadmap to inform you as a consumer of your environmental contribution by using the refill system; the other is an example of a #zero #waste store that provides a fun shopping experience and gives the consumer liberty to determine how much product content you want and the choice of the container you can use.

Whenever we deal with a new approach that affects our habits and lifestyle, there's a phase of trial and error. While the idea and concept of refill have been around for more than two decades, and some products are using it to a certain extent, in the US, we are still lagging behind many other nations when it comes to refilling concepts in day to day life.

Hygiene standards, convenience, packaging lobby, oil lobby present significant obstacles. In addition, in a country where product marketing often trumps product quality by a multiple, it's the environment and the people that pay the price. When packaging is more important than product quality, a shift to refill becomes heavy weightlifting. So, how could we become a society that uses more #refillables and moves towards becoming #environmentally-conscious consumers? What kind of experience would that be?
