Описание к видео 11-8-17 "Reflections of a Combat Veteran" - Rotary Club of Lancaster, PA

“Reflections of a Combat Veteran,” Jeffrey G. Butch

Jeffrey G. Butch was born and raised in Lebanon, PA. He graduated in June 1968 from Lebanon High School, where he showed major college football potential, but enlisted in the US Marine Corps in July 1968 – boot camp at Camp Lejeune, South Carolina, then San Diego for special training, then Guantanamo (GITMO), Cuba for six months, then Camp Pendleton, California for combat training, and then…Vietnam, arriving in September 1969 where he was a combat Marine in Vietnam’s jungles and highlands, finally returning home in 1971.

Jeff reflects on his experiences before, during and after his deployment in Vietnam.

Jeff earned degrees from Millersville University (B.S.) and Ashland University (Masters). His professional career has included sixteen years in the banking industry and fifteen years as a teacher in the public schools. He retired early due to agent orange related-illnesses. His community spirit led him to serve for ten years on the Hempfield School District School Board. He is a life member of the VFW, American Legion, AmVets, DAV and Marine Corps League.
According to Jeff, he could not, and did not, talk about his Vietnam experiences for almost 40 years. Then he was asked by WITF-TV to play a part in its Vietnam documentary project “Finding Solace at the Wall,” in which Jeff plays a prominent part. That role was included in the 10-part, 18 hour Ken Burns’ series on “The Vietnam War,” which recently aired in September, 2017.

Jeff will be a reader during the 2017 Veteran’s Day ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, “the Wall,” in Washington, D.C.

Jeff and his wife live in Lancaster County, have been married for 42 years, and have two children and five grandchildren – whom Jeff says he spoils every day!
