Perun—Lord of Storms & Protector of Sky | Slavic Polytheism 101

Описание к видео Perun—Lord of Storms & Protector of Sky | Slavic Polytheism 101

To the ancient Slavs, the lord of their storms, protector of their tribes, and watcher of their skies was the fiery quick-striking god Perun, Pierun, Piorun. For such a titanic and important god, his nature and domain is often muddled and obscured by efforts to simplify him or contextualize him within the contexts of other religions. But today, we take the time needed to unravel the complicated nature of the god of lightning, in all his terror and glory.

Peunie, boskie grobie! - My Drużyny Twoje! - sława królowi Perunowi! - glory to you, good father Perun.

---The chronicle of Maciej Stryjkowski is much overlooked but valuable for their genuine illumination of the history of Moravia and "less important" parts of Lithuania and Ruthenia. In regards to secular history his work is considered among the best of his time. With regards to his pantheon, his peers and laters copy and distort it, changing of names and roles in sometimes obviously arbitrary ways; so much like with Jan Długosz, this treatment of his work seems to retroactively lower opinions of it. His work, for 300 years, was 'The Histories' of Lithuania, several well-known Ruthenian folktales are primarily preserved by him, and his interest in chronicling the diversity of his realm shaped the attitudes of Lithuanian nobility. In the scheme of things, his bias and mistakes are no worse than the usual favorite Russian or Czech historians; his exclusion from discussion, once again, seems to primarily arise from the disregarding of Polish and Lithuanian culture as biased or manufactured in the views of Russian scholarship of the 1700s and 1800s---'the book was politically important to Lithuania, therefore it must be propaganda'---wholly fallacious reasoning. If you accept, say, the Novgorodian or Rus Primary chronicles, his is no more biased or flawed than those both.

---in the video we discuss axe dances of the Slovaks, mountain Poles and Gorale. Viewers have reached out and let us know that Moravians and Rusyn Hutsuls also practice very similar dances! You can see them here:

---A small error: In the section on sacred fires and Oak shrines, we accidentally say Kuyavian when we should say Pomeranian several times. It was correct in the script but was a silly voiceover mistake 😅.

✲Slavic Polytheism 101 ✲ ----------------------------
Much like Hellenic Greeks, Norse Vikings, and really most Eurasian cultures, Slavs have their own history, a unique pantheon of gods, and their own philosophies about the world. Slavic Polytheism (or Slavic Native Faith, sometimes rodnovery) is the polytheistic " pagan " religion which formed in the slavic world, including Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czechia, Croatia, Serbia, Belarus and more. These videos aim to teach English-speakers about this under-represented family of cultures and faiths. Watching the introduction to Slavic polytheism might be a good place to start -    • What do Slavic Polytheists Believe? |...
