Gregor Reid is an international pioneer in the areas of probiotics, beneficial microbes, and the microbiome. He successfully translated much of his research, being awarded numerous patents related to beneficial microbes, developing a health-care product for vaginal microbiota restoration and conceiving the idea of establishing probiotic yogurt kitchens in Africa that led to the Western Heads East program. Reid has over 535 publications to his name cited in excess of 30,000 times, placing him in the top one per cent of researchers worldwide in microbiology and the microbiome. Having given over 600 talks in 54 countries, he is the recipient of numerous major awards in recognition of his outstanding work through international and national institutions.

He received the 2019 Distinguished University Professor Award. The Distinguished University Professor Award is Western's highest recognition for a faculty member. This award is presented in honour of sustained excellence in teaching, research and service accomplished during an outstanding scholarly career at Western University.
