Amazon Studios is developing a dramatic film chronicling the story of American racing brothers Bill and Don Whittington, whose illustrious motorsports careers were overshadowed by allegations of drug smuggling and high-profile criminal activities. Titled American Speed, the film explores the Whittingtons’ rise in the competitive racing world, including their 1979 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and their involvement in IndyCar. This motorsport success, however, reportedly involved financing through a drug-smuggling operation, part of the “War on Drugs” era in the United States. Eventually, both brothers faced legal consequences: Bill Whittington served time in prison, while Don negotiated a plea deal.
