United Nations Interim Mission in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers and facilities were targeted in three separate incidents in the south of the country today, with four peacekeepers injured in one of the incidents, a UNIFIL press release said. “Four Ghanaian peacekeepers on duty sustained injuries when a rocket, most likely fired by non-state actors in Lebanon, hit their base, UNP 5-42, east of the village of Ramyah.

The peacekeepers sustained injuries and three of them were transferred to a hospital in Tyre for treatment,” UNIFIL said. In another incident, “the UNIFIL Western Sector Headquarters in Shama – under Italian command – was hit by five rockets, which hit the maintenance workshop. Although they caused serious damage to the workshop, no peacekeepers were injured. This was the second time this UNIFIL base was hit by ongoing clashes in the area in less than a week. A 155 mm artillery shell hit the base on 15 November,” UNIFIL added.

Finally, “when a UNIFIL patrol was crossing a road northeast of Khirbat Silim village, an armed person shot directly at the patrol. No peacekeeper injuries were reported in this incident.”

The UNFIL mission has launched investigations into each of these incidents. The mission has also briefed the Lebanese Armed Forces on the matter. UNIFIL “reiterates its reminder to all actors involved in the ongoing hostilities to respect the inviolability of UN peacekeepers and premises. The pattern of regular attacks, direct or indirect, against peacekeepers must cease immediately. Any attack against peacekeepers is a flagrant violation of international law and resolution 1701, which forms the basis of UNIFIL’s current mandate. Despite these and other challenges, peacekeepers remain in all positions and will continue to impartially monitor and report violations of resolution 1701,” the mission’s press release concluded.

Eight 107mm rockets hit the Italian contingent headquarters and the western sector of UNIFIL in Shama, southern Lebanon. The rockets hit some open areas and the spare parts warehouse of the base where no soldiers were present. No injuries were reported. Five Italian soldiers are under observation in the base's infirmary and their conditions are not particularly worrying. Investigations are underway to determine the starting point of the shots and identify those responsible.

We hope that this is the last negative episode involving our soldiers,” he added.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported in a statement on Telegram that the pro-Iranian Shiite party Hezbollah launched a rocket “from the Deir Aames area, one of several launched by Hezbollah in a volley against Israel at 09:50 this morning.” The area indicated by the IDF is located in the western sector of the UNIFIL mission, where the Ghanaian battalion is stationed, and is about 15 kilometers from Shama, where the Italian contingent is stationed.
