STORYLINE:
India stepped up security in all its state capitals on Monday, a day before Republic Day, which marks the adoption of India''s democratic constitution in 1950.
Last week, the Indian government put all its airports on high alert amid reports that al-Qaida-linked militants planned to hijack a plane.
In New Delhi, security forces set up roadblocks on some of the main roads and along the route of the military and cultural parade to be held on Tuesday.
Sniffer dogs and metal detectors also sweeped key areas around the parade route in the search for bombs.
At least 15,000 additional police and soldiers have been deployed in New Delhi, said a spokesman for Delhi Police.
Security was also tightened at all major government telecommunications and power installations, with frequent patrols and body checks for employees.
Snipers took up positions on government buildings in New Delhi, while many offices along the parade route were to be sealed off later on Monday.
Several separatist groups in the country''s restive northeast and in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir have called general strikes for Republic Day.
The country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1947.
On Sunday, suspected separatists blew up a railroad track in India''s remote northeastern Assam state, but no one was hurt, police officials said.
The massive blast damaged the railway track near Deka Mising Gaon in northern Assam, said Bhaskar Mahanta, Assam''s inspector-general of police.
In Assam, railroad authorities said they have cancelled all nighttime train services over the next three days.
