In Norse mythology and religion, the Moon is considered masculine and referred to as Máni, meaning “Moon.” This title stems from the Proto-Germanic mēnô (Moon) which originates in the Proto-Indo-European word *mḗh₁n̥s, meaning both “Moon” and “month.” These concepts branch off the root word meh₁-, which means “to measure.” This connection highlights the cultural significance of the Lunar calendar that our Germanic ancestors followed, relying on the 28-day cycle of the Moon which they used to track the progress of the year. This is still relevant today in our modern English name for the first day of the week, Monday, which means “Moon-Day,” derived from the Old English mōnandæġ.
