Описание к видео PCOS Myths Debunked: The Truth About 'Cysts' and Diagnosis

Myth busting time!!

Polycystic ovarian syndrome needs a new name. The term "polycystic" is not correct because what is actually seen on ultrasounds that looks like lots of tiny cysts are in fact multiple under-developed follicles. PCOS is often associated with high levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) which cause ovulation to become stalled. This means that your body starts growing a primordial follicle (baby egg) in preparation for ovulation, but it doesn't quite make it to full size due to elevated LH. Once this stalling process occurs, your body stops growing this baby egg and starts growing a fresh new one. This can lead to the classic 'string of pearls' look on ultrasound - lots of half grown baby eggs.

Because these are immature follicles instead of true cysts, they DO NOT cause pain. Certain influencers on Instagram have incorrectly talked about PCOS "cysts" bursting and causing severe pain. This is NOT related to PCOS. It is possible to have cysts in your pelvic region, but these are not related to the hormonal and metabolic condition that is PCOS. Pain is a sign of something else going on (which can occur alongside having PCOS). If you experience pelvic pain and have PCOS, I suggest you visit your healthcare provider for a thorough examination into the cause.

Here are the FACTS:
👉 You can have PCOS and NOT have polycystic ovaries - so long as you have high androgens on bloodwork or physical sign of excess abdrogens (including acne, hirsutism or male pattern balding), and have irregular or missing periods (periods 35 days apart)
👉 You can have polycystic ovaries and NOT have PCOS - there are several reasons why your follicles may not be developing to full size including undereating, hypothalamic amenorrhea, puberty, late onset menarche etc
👉 You can have polycystic ovaries on ultrasound at one doctors visit, and then none at a subsequent visit - particularly if you have been working on getting your ovulation and period back on schedule
