The public lecture "Lister's Legacy" was held to mark the centenary of the death of Joseph Lister, the famed pioneer of antiseptics.

Baron Lister was the 3rd Regius Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and was the founder of modern antiseptic surgery.

Joseph Lister arrived in Edinburgh at the age of 25 in 1853 having already qualified as a doctor in London. Lister's career saw him become Professor in Surgery at Glasgow before returning to Edinburgh to take up the Chair of Clinical Surgery.

The lecture was given by Professor James Garden, the current Regius Chair of Clinical Surgery. Professor Garden is a specialist liver, pancreatic and biliary surgeon who undertook the first successful liver transplantation in Edinburgh in 1992.

The lecture was presented at the Old Anatomy Lecture Theatre in the
University's Medical School on 11 February 2012.
