From Nihara Resort and Spa, Umesh and I made our way to the Metro station... But hold on, this isn't your typical Metro. Curious? Let's find out...
In today's vlog, you’re about to meet someone really special: Vinesh, whose heartwarming smile will instantly win you over. He’s an incredible travel companion, a true expert on Kerala, and he drove us around with such care and safety. (His contact is shared below)
The weather was perfect, the views were stunning, and soon enough, we reached the Metro station where we met Raseena, Echubee and Indu (Member of Media Bee) — they are the brilliant minds behind the success of my ‘Raining Smiles’ journey.
Now, not keeping much secret...
In this vlog, I’m taking you on India’s only Water Metro Project, featuring the World's largest fleet of electric boats! Over 6,000 people travel on this unique metro every day—how cool is that?
The Water Metro project isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about reducing pollution, easing traffic, and connecting communities. Eventually, this project will link 10 islands over 78 kms, with 15 routes and 78 electric ferries serving 38 jetties. More than 33,000 islanders will benefit, and it’s about more than transportation—it’s about boosting livelihoods and making a real difference through tourism and commercial growth. Imagine riding on a boat that’s modern, energy-efficient, and eco-friendly—this project is truly a game-changer for Kerala.
Here we met Sherin Wilson from Water Metro, who shared some fascinating insights about the project, and Pradeep, a former marine engineer now overseeing the operations—passionate people making a difference.
Tickets in hand (love that they’re reusable—sustainable travel for the win!), we got ready for an adventure. At the terminal, we discovered the Passenger Control System (PCS), ensuring safety and comfort—just one of many incredible features being introduced here for the first time in India.
What’s even better? The Water Metro is super affordable, with tickets starting at just ₹20 and maxing out at ₹40. And if you go for a quarterly pass, rides cost as little as ₹10!
Another interesting thing about the Water Metro? You can rent these boats for parties, events, or even photo shoots—just ₹15,000 per hour. What a creative way to generate revenue and keep the project thriving!
Today, we were lucky to hop aboard “Ezhimala,” one of the boats named after Kerala’s ports.
Fun fact: this fleet charges faster than your smartphone—just 15 to 20 minutes for a full charge! And they’ve thought of everything—phone chargers, life jackets, you name it.
The ride was smooth, air-conditioned, and mesmerizing. We passed by the beautiful Bolgatty Palace, charming local homes, fishing boats, and saw backwater life at its best—students waiting to catch a boat to school, life happening on the water. It’s something you have to see to believe.
I met Nandini Gopalakrishnan, an IT professional and actor in Malayalam films and web series. We ended up chatting about food, the best places to visit, and everything in between—absolutely delightful! Sherin shared the story of Kerala’s empowering culture. Did you know that Kochi Metro is gender inclusive? They’ve hired transgender individuals with the support of Kudumbashree—a poverty eradication and women's empowerment program initiated by the Government of Kerala. It plays a significant role in facilitating the employment of transgender individuals within the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) framework. Indu also gave me the scoop on her company, 'Escape Now,' which curates special travel escapes focused on women’s journeys, family, and group trips. Sounds like an adventure!
Soon enough we reached our terminal. We took a quick break for some steaming hot mutta dosa and chai—comfort food at its best. And as we were heading back, I bumped into Edison, who had attended one of my events during COVID—what a lovely surprise!
The Kochi Water Metro is celebrating its first anniversary, and I had an absolutely fantastic time being a part of this incredible experience. If you’re ever in Kochi, you HAVE to try this—especially in the evening. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it.
A huge thank you to Water Metro Kochi for this amazing experience. I’m already looking forward to my next ride when I’m back in Kochi!
