SMC 36” Industrial Ceiling Fan

36” industrial ceiling fans no longer became a thing in Indonesian markets since around the 2000s. Ceiling fans that size have been lingering in my wishlist for years. I have made 3 36” custom industrials as of this point, but I still want to get myself a brand new 36” industrial from the 2020’s

So what do I do to get one? Well go to Hong Kong & buy one directly from SMC of course! I just returned from HK last week, and the journey to get this fan was absolutely wholesome. Here goes!

When my family were planning for our trip, I asked a Hong Kong fan enthusiast ‪@gary40560944‬ about where I can get SMC fans. He offered to buy one & told me I could pay him later. As generous as the offer was, I said no thanks as I didn’t want to disturb his daily routine & thought I could get one myself from a store. I still really appreciate it though!

Fast forward on my 2nd day in Hong Kong, I met ‪@katthefanenthusiast5793‬ and we went out to a Built-In Pro store as it’s the only store nearest to my hotel that sells SMC fans. It turns out that we have to pre-order & wait about 5 days for the item to arrive. Since I only had 4 days until my flight home, I couldn’t place an order even when Kat offered me to ship the fan to my house. Thinking about the shipping cost drove me further away from that K36.

The next day, my family went to Disney & met an Uncle who works there. I had a very long conversation with him about why Disneyland lacks power outlets & charging stations & about his line of work, which is caring for plants in the park. I also told him about my main goal in HK which is to get the K36 which I haven’t been able to find.

I went to Apliu street the day after that, and bought a literall suitcase full of fans. Later that day, that Uncle called & said that he just found a store that sells SMC ceiling fans without having to pre-order & that he’s buying it for me. Needless to say, I’m absolutely thrilled! I met him in an MTR station that evening where he gave me the fan (Thankyou sooooo much Uncle Wailun! For the fan & the USB cable 😆👍).

That night I was so exicted that I squeezed a new schedule for the day after that, which was to visit SMC’s office building! I took the MTR to Chai Wan Station where it turns out the building itself is right in front of the station. Needless to say, this trip was absolutely awesome!

Now let’s get to the fan itself!

This SMC K36M is built very similarly to my 2000 & 2010 SMC K56M’s, in that the motor to downrod bracket is threaded right onto the motor shaft like many traditional Pakistani industrial ceiling fans, the shape of the motor itself is almost identical to the K56M but shunken down, the downrod to J hook connection is a single piece, meaning there’s no extra bracket to hold the rubber bushing for the J hook to the downrod.

The downrod is one of the shortest factory downrods I’ve ever seen for an industrial. It makes installing this fan an absolute nightmare because the canopy can’t be lifted out of the way of mounting bolts. But once you have this fan all set up & ready, it rewards you by its impressive airflow & noise level! The blade pitch is very impressive for a modern fan, coupled with the motor which spins quite fast & what I have here is basically something that I’ve been wanting to see for a long time, a modern industrial ceiling fan with kicker performance!
