Bastet was depicted as a cat or a woman with a cat's head and was a national deity. She protected against evil forces and diseases. The Egyptians believed that Bastet could convey messages through cats. If a cat died in the house, the owners would shave their eyebrows as a sign of mourning. Woe to anyone who accidentally ran over a cat: the culprit would be stoned to death by the Egyptians. It was believed that if one asked Bastet to stop the aging process, the goddess would help. Even the ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote about her. Thus, through the centuries and across cultures, our love for these wonderful creatures has been passed down, and we continue to admire them today.
