Kiln is installed with a 3 to 4 % inclination to facilitate the material transport during kiln rotation. To counter act the axial force due to the inclination, the kiln is provided with a thrust device situated on the support nearest the kiln drive station.

The function of the thrust device is to transfer the axial load from the rotary kiln to one or several supports and to maintain the rotary kiln in the axial position.

Designed to perform The automatic hydraulic thrust device (HTD) controls the kiln's axial motion. It counteracts the slope of the kiln and ensures uniform use of the contact surfaces between tyres and supporting rollers, as well as the girth gear and pinion.

Originally the hydraulic thrust device where introduced to allow the kiln to be displaced up and down on the rollers ± 25 mm to even out the wear on the rollers and girth gear.
