Aang might have been the last Airbender, but he was far from the greatest. Don’t get me wrong, Aang is an airbending master, and his teacher was just as skilled. However, the Air Nomad culture goes back thousands of years, well before the air nomad genocide. In the Legend of Korra we hear about a great airbender named Guru Laghima. He lived hundreds of years before Aang and was said to have discovered true freedom, a detachment from the earth. It is said that he spent his last forty years never touching the ground. Aang or his teacher Monk Hyatso never attained that kind of power, but there was another airbender who could; Zaheer. While he was not born an Airbender, he studied the ways of Guru Laghima. His teachings influenced the ideology of The Red Lotus, the counterforce to the White Lotus. When Zaheer gained his airbending abilities through the Harmonic Convergence, Zaheer put his knowledge to the test. He entered the void, unbound himself from this material world, and became wind. Zaheer was the second airbender ever to gain flight, but how did he do this? In this video we will look into just how Zaheer was able to fly where no other living airbender was able to. To do this we will be looking not only at Zaheer and his actions, but also that of the Red Lotus. It is also relevant to note that he is able to fly even after his plans are foiled, showing an unusually strong conviction.
