Mecklenburg County residents voted to approve a one-cent sales tax that would fund transit and road projects.

The measure passed with 52% in favor of the tax, Tuesday's election results show. The votes will be canvassed at a later date.

The tax increase has left both city leaders and community members with split feelings about impacts on the Charlotte area — and their pockets — in the long run.

The county’s current sales tax will increase from 7.25% to 8.25% with the vote, which is forecast to generate $19.4 billion over the next three decades.

This money would go toward funding things like transit expansion and road improvements.

While some who live here say the tax increase is small and could help with improvement and safety of city transit, others feel the new transit authority — a majority of who won’t be chosen until after Election Day — will not represent those who actually rely on public transportation. #News #Politics #Charlotte
