Bloomers are a famous invention that started the “rational dress” for women. The entire outfit consisted of a short jacket, skirt extending below knee level and loose trousers gathered at ankles - called Turkishstyle pantaloons during the 1850s. It stirred much controversy eventually falling out of fashion but the name survived being used during the bicycles' cycling craze in 1890
