I wanted to walk through a few features of the actual hardware and software configuration of the Pyxis MedStation ES system to help lab coordinators, instructors, and faculty prepare students for the optimal experience and the intuitive look and feel of how the equipment and the system operates to support nursing care workflows.

This is the Pyxis system itself. There is a keyboard that is down here that can be cleaned easily and readily. There is a touchscreen that allows us ease of use, so we don't have to type, but we do have that opportunity when we need it.

There is a barcode scanner to help with safe medication administration. Within the Pyxis unit itself, are drawers that store the medication. We'll take a look at some of the different ways that that can be done as we progress through the discussion.

All right, let's sign into the Pyxis MedStation and look at some of the touchscreen features and keyboard attributes that I was speaking of. I've got the login ready to go. I'm going to use the keyboard to enter in my password, and I'm going to click on sign in. I use the keyboard for that functionality.

I'm going to get sign into the Pyxis and just go through some general information that's available through touchscreen as well as the keyboards. As we look at the screen, I'm going to touch on all available patients. This brings me to the patients that are available to me on my assigned unit that I can now review. If you see here, there are some names that are highlighted in orange.

This alerts me, and this is a nice safety feature of Pyxis, that there are patients with the same name. So, it's a name alert that requires me, as a nurse, to be diligent in selecting any patients that have orange, like Lilly and Lauren Black, for example.

All right, I'm going to select Lauren Black as a patient and just perform a very simple and straightforward medication removal for Lauren. All of Lauren's meds will come up available to me once I select her name. But, I want to review a little bit more information that's available to me, as a nurse, so I can gather the information that is helpful and relevant in terms of maintaining medication safety and overall quality.

There are chevrons that allow me to look at additional information on Lauren, such as her age, her admission date, her attending physician, and if she has any known drug allergies.

I'm going to select Keflex for Lauren. I also have a chevron indicator here that allows me to look at relevant information around that medication in further detail if warranted. There is a Keflex now selected on the right hand side of the screen that I'm going to remove on patient Lauren Black.

Simply by selecting removed med, it prompts the med station to open the drawer where the medication can be found and removed from the specified pocket, in this case the Cubie, where the medication can be found. Once I close the drawer, the workflow is completed.
