This video shows how NOVACAM SURFACEINSPECT system provides micron-precision 3D flatness measurement of a valve body surface. Flatness is a crucial aspect of many manufactured surfaces. For example, an automotive valve body shown in this video must be perfectly flat to achieve a perfect seal with its gasket.

In the video, the system's optical galvo scanner acquires the surface 3D topography following a user-defined scanning sequence. The instrument scans in a raster pattern, and obtains up to 100,000 3D points per second. Once the part is scanned, the system can directly proceed to automated flatness analysis or users may choose to interactively examine a 3D model of the acquired surface.

With SURFACEINSPECT system, geometric and dimensional calculations are based on the dense 3D point-cloud obtained by the galvo scanner. From this data, user-defined GD&T parameters -including surface flatness -are calculated and can be output in automated PASS/FAIL reports. For better insight into the machining process, an interactive colour deviation map highlights deviations from a perfectly flat plane or from a CAD drawing. Users can quickly obtain micron-resolution measurements anywhere on the surface to investigate areas of concern.

Thanks to the high density of the scan data, defect detection is also available and can be automated. Finally, users may set up automated scanning sequences for high-throughput inline inspection as well as for lab settings.
